Pottoka project

Also rescued from the closed zoo of Almuñécar, in the summer of 2008 we bring to the Parc del Garraf a pack of seven ponies. A rustic and old pony that we think can be adapted smoothly to live in Garraf . throughout the year. These ponies spent the first weeks in a reception fence, to be released in a 30-hectare transition enclosure. In this space, the study of the Research Group of the Parc and the Miranda Foundation with the UAB has been carried out to assess the impact of these equids on vegetation and their uniqueness in relation to horses. We have observed that apart from grazing the reed grass pastures, they pull them up and eat their roots, which can be very beneficial for biodiversity, because it can become a restricting factor of this plant that has colonized the Garraf area.

Our herd is made up of a male, which has the vasectomy to control birth rates and prevented the instability  by an undesired increase in the population, and six females of very different ages. It is a well-united  natural group and therefore has a great capacity for adaptation, organization and survival, which has quickly adapted to the space it has.

Currently, a year after their arrival, the pottokas already graze the 400 hectares of Parc del Garraf. The Pottoka Project begins to take shape, although it is still in the phase of definition and expansion.
